We were called to have a look at a chimney that appeared to be separating from the home. Our suggestion was that it was leaning as a result of having been built with a faulty, insufficient base or footing. After our inspection, we found it to be the case...It's a good thing we arrived when we did!
If you are not a properly skilled, licensed chimney mason, you should not be building chimneys or fireplaces. Here is the chimney after we removed the brick facing. The Bristol building inspector said he's never seen one like it! No building codes were followed... but from the outside, you would never know.
StoneCraft follows the strict codes derived by federal guidelines. Exacti measurements of the firebox will determine all dimensions and flue size, damper choices, offsets and smoke chamber details. StoneCraft will create for you a fireplace/chimney that exceeds modern building code requirements.
Here it is, the final product. Both the chimney and interior fireplace are finished in hand-selected, New England field stone. Each stone is cemented to a solid concrete block with what is known as "blind mortar joint", a technique that has an appearance to a dry-laid stone wall. Build it with quality, Build with StoneCraft!
The Esplanade
Middletown, RI
This photo features a portion of the project after being acid-washed..
The new owners of this beachside home called in 3 of the most highly recommended patio installers in the area. Out of those 3 recommendations, StoneCraft was hired for the project based on competitive-pricing, a thorough understanding of what the client hoped to achieve and recommendations from some of our previous clients. We hear these things often, and thought we'd share them:
Their concern was the stone and it's coloring. The others had recommended materials that were price-driven and really did not offer good suitability for this home or it's location by the sea. Our choice of stone was derived by its likeness to the beachside cliff just across the street and its reasonable pricing.
Another concern was longevity. The others offered installation processes that were sub-par, such as dry-laid patio panel installation whereas we offered complete settings in cement and 5'' thick compacted sub-bases. The works are only as good as the footings they stand upon...
poor foundations=inferior builds. The walls, steps and foundation veneers all feature solid concrete pedestals poured over compacted sub-bases.
BARRINGTON, RI - Estimated Completion August 2015
One of our projects currently ongoing is the addition of a wine cellar in a Barrington, RI home. Located in Nayatt Point, the home in owned by someone with some stylish design ideas!
Working alongside Broomhead Builders and Butterfield Electric, both of Barrington, StoneCraft has been implementing some hand-crafted, Native New England fieldstone to create stone arches, chimney facings and walls of stone.
"It looks great!", says John, the owner of the Barrington home. "I look forward to coming home after work to see the progression!"
We hear it all the time, but it never grows old! Customers of StoneCraft are always satisfied, and we take every effort to earn that satisfaction on every project!
AMAZING! It's true, that is the kind of response we like to hear from our clients!
Here you go...A soon to be completed, bathroom vanity made of hand-selected fieldstone. Yes ladies and gentleman, this is a one-of-a-kind bathroom vanity, in King Richard's style!
A WORK IN PROGRESS!
Things have progressed..The Carpenters have begun installing their cabinets and the painters are soon to follow...
Shortly, we will post photos of the finished product, complete with a mirror, trim-work, marble sink and cabinet doors...STAY TUNED!
Romancing the Stone!
Well..we were side-tracked! Stonework can be addictive..once homeowners see the finished product, more times than not we are asked to add other details and features. Just upstairs from the wine-cellar we retrofitted a native fieldstone facing to the existing fireplace! We will post an updated picture once the hewn, wooden mantle arrives!
JAMESTOWN, RI - COMPLETED OCTOBER 2014
When the owners of Village Hearth Bakery in Jamestown asked us to build the fireplace and chimney at the Jamestown home, we were thrilled!
Fireplaces are unique in every application, and no two are alike. Whether its the dimensions, draft, stone facing, placement in the home, and a host of other options...they all possess their own character.
Now that the structure of the fireplace is complete, StoneCraft is ready to move on through with a unique mix of fieldstone to adorn the structure inside and outside the home!
The chimney and fireplace have are somewhat simple in design. What is not simple, and is unknown to many contractors currently building fireplaces and chimneys in the State of Rhode Island is the mathematics involved with determining the necessary sizing requirements and placement of flue, smoke champer, throat, damper and other integral parts; according to statements made by recognized chimney and fireplace safety guilds. Many builders repeat the same building dimensions on all the structures they build with little to no consideration to placement in the home, structure and other greatly important details. StoneCraft works diligently to consider such job-specific details, as well as modern building code requirements and research.
